Randy Kaech is an active youth chess tournament director and organizer in Northwest Washington. He's the founder of the Northwest High School Chess League, coach of the Ferndale High School chess team, and president of the Washington High School Chess Association. He has also coached several elementary and middle school chess clubs in the area.
Randy discovered chess in rural Pacific County, Washington, watching his uncles play. In junior high, his social studies teacher informed him of an all ages chess tournament taking place in a few weeks at the nearest community college, about an hour away. After winning the tournament, he quit playing chess because "there was no one left to play". If only someone there had told him of the international popularity of the sport! In late high school, the Tacoma Chess Club was discovered, and Randy would go on to participate in many tournaments, eventually earning the USCF Expert title. Part of his motivation for chess event organization is to ensure that all youth don't miss out on the ample opportunities to enjoy chess and its many benefits.
